What does Sass mean to you? This was in the March Chronicle. In my case, it was just something that I fell into. I am a R/O at Bristol Shooting Ranges in Bristol Wisconsin, on the Black Powder Range (no surprise there, right?). I would have range duty and for a couple of years, I would see the monthly matches on out Skirmish Range, adjacent to the B/P Range. I mosied on over and talked to a few people and decided to try it out, since I already had a pair of C&B Revolvers, a Lever Action rifle in .357 magnum and a S X S shotgun (Stoeger Coach Gun). I also dress like a ranch Hand anyway so the only real investment needed was a Cowboy hat and a different pair of boots... I shot for a couple of years with the Bristol Plains Pistoleros in Black Powder Class. Seeing as how I was usually the only user of The Holy Black, I made it a crusade to convert heathens from that passing fad, Smokeeeeeless Powder to The Holy Black. I was getting small increases and posted a lot on SASSNET. It became more fun as we started to expand. Then one dayt, a Member asked for some info about Hynes V.A. Hospital near Chicago and I answered. I met Peaches N. Creme and T.W. Jones as they came down from Little York to visit her son who was wounded in an IED explosion in Iraq. I parted that day feeling good that I helped somebody and never figured that it would go any further. Prior to that, about the only really out of the area shooter I had ever shot with was Ol Zeb, Rest ghis soul, up in Bristol. I got an invitation from Peaches to come to a Charity Shoot.... St. Judes Annual Charity Shoot held on Memorial Day weekend in Monmouth and Milan Il. 2 Clubs in an area and they do a lot together. I got there and met the nicest people I could have ever met. They became family to me, more so than you would expect. I got to know everybody connected with the shoot and have been back every year, with a few years just coming out for local shoots and a few special events such as re enactment of The Gunfight at the OK Corral in Monmouth at the site of Wyatt Earps Birthplace. Now, I could shoot just about any time I wish, being an R/O at 2 separate shooting clubs. I dont stay with SASS for the shooting anymore. I shoot just as slow as ever, dont care where I land place wise, dont modify my shooting irons to get better times, and still send out copious amounts of SMOKE and BOOM downrange. This is fun to me. But the real reason I stay is the people. SASS has become an extended family to me. My wife doesnt shoot, nor does she care about coming out to the shoots so I go alone. But as soon as I arrive, I am no longer alone. That, mu friends is the true meaning of fun....
