What does a Californias seafloor neighborhood really look - TopicsExpress

What does a Californias seafloor neighborhood really look like? Scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey were in the BOEM Pacific regional offices today to discuss progress on the California Seafloor Mapping Program (CSMP), a visionary offshore mapping and groundtruthing effort to confirm what we know about the geology and biological communities on ocean floor along the Golden State. BOEM supports USGS and their world-class mapping efforts with funding through its Environmental Studies Program. For information on the CSMP, go to: walrus.wr.usgs.gov/mapping/csmp/example_project_photographs.html Be sure to check out the CSMPs video and photo portal at: axiomdatascience/maps/usgs.php Photo Info: After remote sensing of the ocean floor to characterize depth and bottom type, a photo sled is lowered into the ocean to gather field data that either complements or disputes remote sensing data that was collected. These photos are just a few of the many taken by the photo sled of the ocean floor residents and where they choose to live. This groundtruthing or reality check helps scientists to refine their interpretation of seafloor habitats.
