What does it mean these days to be a Catholic university? Dr. Jonathan Sanford... It is no secret that Catholic colleges and universities are struggling to reclaim their identity. I recently participated in a conference focused on this theme called The Idea of a Catholic College: Charism, Curricula, and Community, which took place on the campus of King’s College and included a keynote address by Reverend John I. Jenkins, CSC, president of the University of Notre Dame. The conference was encouraging due to the frank acknowledgement by most of its participants, which included other Catholic university presidents and provosts, that there are indeed significant challenges to reclaiming the raison d’etre of Catholic colleges and universities.
