What does it mean to be a church member? Are we like the Rotary Club – a group that does good in the community, takes dues, and requires a certain attendance pattern to stay active? I think we are 1 for 3 by that score. I think the church is like the Fellowship of the Ring: we are on a mission together, and something real is at stake for us, each and all, and for the world. No one makes you come. There is no contract to sign. We gather because of the mission and we learn how interdependent on each other we are along the way. At the deepest level, the church is a body. So when a member of your body is missing, it is a real issue. When the whole body gathers, it is always a cause for celebration. Granted, like your body and mine, the church body has work to do; and it is good work indeed. This morning at South Main Baptist Church - Houston, Texas we are going to celebrate the body of the Christ. We will give thanks for new members and long-tenured ones. Well discover the mystery of grace and share the work of the Kingdom of God. What could be better than that? I hope youll be at 4100 Main Street this morning. It literally will not be the same without you.
