What does it really mean when someones title includes Activist? Doesnt it also mean annoying pain in the ass troublemaker to some degree, under the surface of our lexicon? I know I have smelled that undercurrent definition under the conversation many times before. As Pete Seegers name and face and music came up on the network tv montages of the famous people we lost, his career title was listed as Singer/Activist, which made me wonder: How big a pain in the ass was he, exactly? How much trouble did he get himself into? He doesnt seem like much of a threat to anyone, and he lived to be a realllllly old dude, so he must have been doing something right. And I watched the Susan Sonntag biodoc thing, rather interesting, as well. But again, who really declares themselves an activist in the normal world of the Midwest? How many do you actually know on a first name basis? Why am I so reluctant to outright declare myself as one, why is that title so heavy to assume? Is it because when you say it, dream it, build it they might actually hear it, believe it, and then actually come? And then what? If you say we can change this, people will rightfully start looking straight to you for the solution and the list of instructions for how to get there, and every single one will need at least a small dish of opportunity to take home.
