What exactly does it mean to press on as Paul describes in Philippians? Do you remember the woman who had an issue of blood for 17 years? Seventiesteen YEARS. How awful. She spent every last cent on doctors and found no relief. She hears about Jesus and His miraculous healings and decides she that He is her only hope. This is a woman in desperate straits. Can you imagine her weakened state. How she has suffered all those years without remedy. She goes to where Jesus is with all of His disciples and followers, a huge throng of people! And she presses in through the crowd in desperation. She reaches forward, arms out stretched pressing in between bodies as she says to herself,If I only can touch the hem of His garment, I will be healed! Why the hem of His garment? Because that is all she could hope for in the midst of the crowd and in her weakened state. But the difference is, that is where her faith is! And instantly as soon as she made contact with Jesus clothing, instantly she was healed! Her abandonment in her pursuit of Christ and her pressing in through the throng of people and her fingers desperately stretching forth to touch Him....is what it means to press on in Christ! Are we that hungry and thirsty for Him? Are we driven? Obsessed even with Jesus? Do we have a driving thirst that creates in us a craving to have our eyes opened a little bit more to catch a clearer vision of our Lord and Saviour? If not we are deceiving our selves and the Truth is not in us. Another colorful imagery of pressing on. Have you ever seen runners in a race approaching the finish line? One of my favorite movies is Chariots of Fire. Professional athletes are trained on how to finish a race. Youve seen the pictures, arms back, chests out, necks straining forward, reaching for that finish line. Many a race has been won by the one athlete who presses forward. That is the imagery Paul was alluding to in Philippians. How often are we to press on? How often are you hungry for Him? Every day.
