What factors are responsible for skin marks and blemishes? Our skin contains a darkening pigment known as the melanin; which is responsible for our skin color. It is also secreted by our body, to protect against UV damage. However, it is not distributed evenly throughout the skin. Thus, places with a higher secretion tend to get darker than the others. These result in pigmentation or dark-spots as well as freckles. Another couple of reasons for a blemished skin are acne and other skin infections. While the former is cause by clogged pores, the latter may be a result of clogged pores or dry, cracked skin. However, both tend to leave behind ugly marks and scars.
