What first captured me about this article was the title, “A Shelter Directors Evolution’. I had no idea when the title captured me, how long the article actually was. I just started reading. And I couldn’t stop! Barbara Carr, the author of this, her own evolutional biography, is inspiring and humbling. Thank you Ms Carr for having the personal strength to question your own beliefs; to open your mind to new information; to set aside your misconceptions and dedicate your heart and time to creating change in the minds of others, and in the lives of free roaming cats everywhere. Being wrong about something is not what is important in life; what matters, what makes us stronger and better, is learning, growing, accepting and changing when we aren’t. This article made me stop and think about my own opinions and perceptions of cats, domestic and free roaming. It also made me think about opinions that I hear and read from others, both pro and con. I think I need to be more understanding of others views that differ from mine. I need to remember that not all people know the facts about free roaming cats, and therefore their opinions/beliefs are not always rooted in true understanding. I need to be more patient and instead of getting angry or frustrated, I need to try and educate and enlighten more. If more minds and hearts like Ms Carr where opened, think how many more cats could be saved. Have your perceptions of free roaming cats grown and changed over time? What created/caused your change? Have you ever turned a negative free roaming mind to a pro advocate mind? What did you do or say to affect that change in another person? maddiesfund.org/Maddies_Institute/Articles/Community_Cats_A_Shelter_Directors_Evolution.html
