What good is God? I just listened to an interesting story on the way home from dropping my kids off at school! It was about a “Rabbi and a soap maker who went for a walk together one day. As they walked along, the soap maker said to the Rabbi, “What good is faith and religion? Look at all the trouble and misery of the world, after thousands of years of teaching about goodness and love and truth and peace and justice, and this after all the prayers and sermons and teachings. If religion is so good and true why do injustice, poverty and violence continue? The Rabbi thought about the question. She reflected, as it is a question so many of us ask when we encounter suffering. What good is religion? What good is God? If all this pain, misery and suffering still exist? The Rabbi said nothing. They continued walking until she noticed a child playing. Then the Rabbi said, “Look at that child. You say soap cleans people. But look at the dirt on that youngster. Of what good is soap? With all the soap in the world, the child is still dirty! I wonder how effective soap is after all.” Of course the soap maker protested, “But Rabbi, soap can’t do any good unless it’s used!” “Exactly,” said the Rabbi, and so it is from what we learn from religion and God’s love for us, they’re all ineffective unless they’re applied and used!” And so it is with this stuff I write about every day! We can live the sweetest lives with God, if we stick with Him, unflinching and trusting God always, forgiving quickly, leaving the past in the past, loving extravagantly, doing the intuitively right, excellent and most loving thing in every moment, example and experience, calming down and listening to God before making any move, humbling ourselves by improving or ignoring (even when 10,000 words are said against us), not being so hard on ourselves, but focused on constant and never ending improvement, becoming professional ignorers and choosing our battles very wisely, unceasingly thanking God for everything, and asking “How may I serve in making this world a better place?” But, they’re all ineffective unless they’re applied and used!” WE GO WITH GOD!
