What happened? This is the relevant question that masses of our people, out of grief and surprise, ask to all of us who have been serving in the SRC and structures of SASCO. From day to day, after September 17 elections, we are confronted by this question and we obviously give different answers for we perceive the situation differently. The people are infuriated not by the fact that SASCO has lost elections at NMMU, but by the imagination of being led by right wing puppies and it is indeed a petrifying situation to confront. The masses of our people, including leadership of the mass democratic movement who took part in the build-up towards the elections, couldn’t see this blow coming; hence, they still find it hard to believe it really happened. We understand that some will be opportunistic and begin to provide a twisted and an incorrect analysis of the situation that has transpired at NMMU. The people should dismiss everyone who wants to make himself a self-appointed political analyst; the situation currently does not require such people. The masses of our people have voted for SASCO in numbers and we must take off our hats and salute them for this massive support to a revolutionary student movement. The support we have received clearly indicates that the organisation still commands hegemony amongst our people. The number of votes we have received was more than what we expected and what we received last year when we won SRC elections; hence, to some it is still strange that SASCO lost. The results did not reflect what was visible on the ground moving towards the elections. However, we are not complaining because this is part of the democracy which we are the first advocates of. We have received more votes than last year, but we still lost. It raises many questions, but we are unable to answer them. We know very well this is a manufactured loss, but we will not dwell on that for we have a responsibility to move forward with the revolution. This is just a detour and it hampers not the attainment of free education as our strategic objective. We must have it in our minds comrades that we have won. Let’s go and thank our people for defending the organisation and ask them to remain solid even next year. The enemy is equally not sure whether to be happy or not because they can’t explain how their emergence came about. We need to be strong and continue to defend the movement regardless of these tactical detours that tend to disturb the programme. Our comrades should not feel bad they have done nothing wrong. You have mobilised properly as you were instructed and we thank you for that. It is not your fault that there is an intervention of an evil spirit in these elections. The work has been done correctly and we don’t doubt your ability to mobilise. Aluta Continua! Amandlaaa…
