What happened to Deshira Selimaj depends on who you ask, though some things are certain: The 42-year-old mother of three is dead, a Henderson police officer is responsible, and the debate over her death is far from over. Selimaj was shot near Pecos Ridge and Sunridge Heights parkways on the afternoon of Feb. 12, standing outside her ice cream truck. This was the end result of an incident her family says began more than half an hour earlier, when Selimaj’s husband, Zyber, was pulled over by Henderson police in his ice cream truck for various traffic violations. Zyber Selimaj refused to sign the ticket. Instead, he called his wife to the scene, and she brought two of her three children. As Zyber Selimaj tells it, she and the children exited their ice cream truck to find guns drawn on them. Mere minutes later, Zyber says, his wife was fatally shot while her children watched. Henderson police have a different story. They insist Selimaj had a knife, held that knife towards one of her children’s throats and attacked an officer. Police tried to Tase Selimaj first, police chief Richard Perkins said, but when that didn’t work, 23-year-old officer Luke Morrison shot Selimaj.
