What happens if I need to loan my vehicle to someone who will be living out of state? Many states require that you purchase insurance in their state if you stay longer than one month to abide by their insurance regulations. Can you get insured on a car that you dont own? You can but most companies will not allow for that so it limits your options. Insurance follows the vehicle, not the driver. You would have no need to insure the vehicle if it is insured by the other person in a different state as long as its kept there for at least 10 months out of the year (per your insurance companies contract). Just have them add you as a driver to her policy if you plan to drive the vehicle.
