What happens when you combine acupuncture and hypnosis? Two of my Mind-Body Clinic students and colleagues got the ball rolling. But here is part of the inside story: Dr. Schiff, a physician in our Integrative Medicine Fellowship program also does acupuncture in his medical treatment of patients. He was always asking what would happen if we combined hypnosis with acupuncture. One day I came to my Mind-Body Clinic in a very bad mood and a headache. I was annoyingly irritable and not too pleasant to be around that morning. Frustrated, I asked the physicians training with me what they wanted to do. recognizing my nasty mood, Dr. Elad Schiff said, "I think we ought to work on you for starters." I agreed. But before he began to practice a hypnotic induction method on me, he went to his car and brought in some acupuncture needles. As he began the hypnotic induction he placed four to five needles in my hands, feet and top of my head. Within a few moments my body disappeared... or that is what it felt like to me. It was euphoric, my headache lifted, and so did my mood. I was excited and then did the same combination of needling and hypnosis with him and we went around the room so that each doctor got to have the experience. This lead to asking our colleague, Dr. Opher Caspi, to help us prepare a professional or scholarly paper about our ideas.
