What have I learned in 39 years on this island, Earth? Here are some thoughts and observations: Love and pray for your family with all your heart every day. You may not always get the love back and may not always like them but never stop loving or praying. Love your friends as family and let them know. Sometimes a letter, an email, or a “thinking of you” can make all the difference between grey or blue skies and sometimes life or death. Do your best to make someone smile and feel good about who they are. Let your inner light shine and share the light with others. Practice this daily and the light will spread around the world. Never take for granted how blessed you are. Look around you, close your eyes and then open them, take a deep breath, and then thank God for all you have. You’ll never get everything you want, so appreciate what you have and share it if someone is in need. Except for cheesecake. Life is short and being scared takes up too much time, so say and do what needs to be done and take a chance every now and then. Silence is the key to knowing yourself, so take time daily or weekly to sit in silence with yourself and think, cry, philosophize, pray, or rest your mind. A good book takes us away from the world. A good movie brings us together. A good song never lets us forget. A shared meal never keeps us apart for too long. Stories only ever happen to those who know how to tell them. Every day can be an adventure if we let it happen as such. Share your stories. Teaching is a vocation and not an occupation. A good teacher is there for you but a great teacher is always there even when you grow up and away. In time, you may grow to call most your friend and also your extended family. You will truly never be alone. There are many lessons to learn in the next 39+ years and I welcome them and look forward to becoming all the wiser. Peace and blessings to you all.
