What if Qatar wanted to build a pipeline through Syria to the Mediterranean rather than just shipping everything out of the Persian Gulf? Russia supports Assad because it would be hurt by Qatar, one of the largest liquid natural gas producers, having a route to the Mediterranean Sea (and thus cheaper transport to Europe). Iran would be hurt if Syria sides with Saudi Arabia and Qatar because then it would NEVER get a pipeline into the Mediterranean Sea. Is it just possible that all this (and more!) could be the result of a money hunt? Yes, there is a religious aspect... Sunni and Shia stuff... but that is just to get the man on the street riled up enough to blow him-/herself up in support of the cause.
