What if there are at least ten there?” He replied, “For the sake of those ten, I will not destroy it.” ( Gn 18) Prayer: Purify my heart, oh God. Thoughts: This piece of scripture is taken from the discourse between Abraham and God with regards to Sodom and Gomorrah’s pending destruction. Abraham’s appeal was for the innocent persons who lived there and would not have deserved the consequence which was about to be handed down. These are the stories which scare persons away from the Old Testament - this image of God as an avenger or disciplinarian who had to be negotiated with or bargained with in order to be fair or at least so it would seem. However what can be seen here if examined closely enough is the mercy of God and His fairness. If for example, you are a farmer and you have planted a crop and among the plants there are several which may have a fungus that is not only communicable and easily so among the other plants but which will eventually prove fatal not only to the particular species of crop but to other plants, you would be faced with a decision. You can either simply destroy the entire infected crop or attempt to selectively destroy those that are infected. This was the decision God was faced with. What I have realized with us is that we do not readily acknowledge that certain sinful acts are extremely destructive; therefore when faced with the consequences we view God as unfair and unjust. The moral values attached to certain acts are there because of the realistic and sound effect it has on the human person. Even if the moral element is removed the reason it should not be pursued is still very much there. As humans though we don’t ordinarily tend to go that deep and instead spend our time lamenting our consequences and nursing our wounds or attempting to escape our consequences. God is not unjust, we just happen to be a people who would prefer our own way. Sing: Purify my heart...... youtube/watch?v=zQVOgscVooM --
