What if there was a 100-mile trail race where you did not know - TopicsExpress

What if there was a 100-mile trail race where you did not know what the course would be ahead of time? Nobody would. You would agree to show up at 6AM on a Saturday, at a spot not more than 120 miles away from the center of the city. You would not be notified of the starting point until 6PM the previous evening. When you arrived at the start, youd be given a map with turn-by-turn instructions for a 100 (or even up to 110) mile course along trails and mountains. There would be aid stations, but you would not know exactly how many or how far apart they would be until arriving at the start. Aid stations would be anywhere from 5-14 miles apart, with basic but sound aid and reliable volunteers. There would be no drop bags. There would be no cut-offs that you knew of, but you werent entirely sure that this would not change at some point if you were taking too long. There would be minimal trail markers, one marker at major turns only. There would be no pacers or crew. There would be no elevation profile. The entry fee would be $50 and the promise not to press charges. Would you do it? Im thinking, heck, yeah! There is no such race. I was just thinking what it would be like to turn up at the start and have no idea of what the route looked like ahead of time. Of course, you could manage this with any race just by signing up for an unknown one, then not reading a thing about it ahead of time. But in real life if you were to do that, we would probably just call you foolish. Ok, back to doing chores...
