What ih the name of the Good Lord is wrong with our media- electronic and print? My limited knowledge in Grammar & Mass Communication tell me words can be categorized into two main types - OPEN CLASS and CLOSED SYSTEM. My message: our journalists must appreciate the fact that words, especially those words that belong to the Open Class always have their FIRST LETTERS CAPITALIZED in newspaper headlines irrespective of where they appear, that is if only the first letters of the words are capitalized, while (never whiles) the first letters of words belonging to the CLOSED CLASS system CANNOT BE CAPITALIZED. It is preposterous and suicidal for our news portals to have headlines such as: Trouble At The Black Stars Camp instead of: Trouble at the Black Stars Camp REASONS: Some word classes are OPEN, that is, new words can be added to the class as the need arises- nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs belong to this group. NB: Pronoun is treated as a sub-group of noun (The subclass of pronouns, within the open noun class, is also closed). On the other hand, we never invent new prepositions, determiners, or conjunctions. These classes include words like of, the, and but. They are called CLOSED word classes because they are made up of finite sets of words which are never expanded (though their members may change their spelling, for example, over long periods of time). ucl.ac.uk/internet-grammar/wordclas/open.htm
