What is Cinco de Mayo? Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of the Underdog. The celebration for the perseverance of independent freedoms. So many times have people fought back oppressive regimes, tyrannical governments, and delusional leaders...and this battle still holds great importance as one of Mexicos most famous victories. Although not a major strategic win in the overall war against the French, Zaragozas success at Puebla represented a great symbolic victory for the Mexican government and bolstered the resistance movement.* I know that normally you would find cats in sombreros and jokes (and dont you worry, youll get those too haha) but I absolutely recommend you take a few minutes of your time to read up on this amazing battle, the trials and tribulations that led the families to pick up arms, and the amazing bravery that these citizen soldiers held in their hearts to protect what was theirs. This victory would be short lived as control of Mexico city would be taken back and forth between Mexican and French forces, but this battle would serve to set the foundation for rebuilding Mexico in the decades to come. The Battle of Puebla was important for at least two reasons. First, although considerably outnumbered, the Mexicans defeated a much better-equipped French army. This battle was significant in that the 4,000 Mexican soldiers were greatly outnumbered by the well-equipped French army of 8,000 that had not been defeated for almost 50 years. Second, since the Battle of Puebla, no country in the Americas has subsequently been invaded by any other European military force.* Thank you for your time.- Joao Alfaro *Excerpts clipped from Wikipedia article Cinco de Mayo
