What is Down Syndrome? Down syndrome is named after John Langdon Down, the doctor who first identified the genetic condition in 1866. When babies are conceived, they typically inherit 23 chromosomes from their mothers and 23 from their fathers. Children with Down syndrome, though, have an extra chromosome — actually a tripling of their 21st chromosome — giving them a total of 47 instead of 46. (The condition is usually detected before a child is born.) This extra genetic material causes the delays in mental and physical development typical in children with the condition. Although, Gracie has her delays in speech and fine motor skills-Gods not through with her because she improves daily, her physical abilities are outstanding. (She hasnt had PT since May!) We give Him all glory! Look what she can do:
