When babies are conceived, they typically inherit 23 chromosomes from their mothers and 23 from their fathers. Children with Down syndrome, though, have an extra chromosome — actually a tripling of their 21st chromosome — giving them a total of 47 instead of 46. (The condition is usually detected before a child is born.) This extra genetic material causes the delays in mental and physical development typical in children with the condition.
