What is Leadership to Me.... Leaders work by example using generally accepted words and exhibiting good intentions, then put them to action. Leadership is helping others move in a direction guided by the laws of God and man; helping them to have a prosperous life on earth and eternal life in heaven. Among the skills and attributes that lead to being an effective leader are character, setting goals, and working to be the best that you can be. Even when it is difficult, aiming toward goals challenges you and helps you lead others in the same direction. Try to get everyone excited doing the same thing. Accomplishing this helps assure success. Using teamwork to solve your problems helps you to succeed as a leader. You don’t have to think like other people, but listening to what they say helps you see things another way helping to make a better decision. Learning to use problem solving skills with your team is also an attribute of a good leader. Leading doesn’t mean you are always right, it means you have an open mind to ideas and use what skills God gives you to help you reach your goals. Have respect for everyone, rich and poor and always be kind; help as many others as possible with their problems. Work it out together by listening and being kind, not insisting to do things your way, give others time for their input. Communicating is the last skill, and doesn’t mean talking all the time. You need to understand your points as well as the others. You need to find ways to talk through issues in a calm manner. Listen more and try to find a way to lead everyone through the discussion. This can be difficult. Being a leader doesn’t mean you always get what you want, but you keep pushing toward your goals. A leader I admire is my football coach. Coach L….. teaches true teamwork and the importance of working together and trusting each other. He is a leader with skills, and always respects his football team. He knows winning is not everything, but if you lead your teammates, play like a team, listen, communicate, set goals, and problem solve together, (even though we are all different and have different places,) we can work together and win. Coach L….. also creates a team environment with his assistant coaches. We watch them work together for our team, setting important goals. His actions are of a leader and his words inspire me to be a better person in everything, not just football. He is a Godly person and he leads me down the right path. I know he wants what is good for all people. He is not selfish, and doesn’t do things to win that aren’t of good character. Losing with good character is still winning. I know he is guiding me to make choices that will make me a better leader. I will never forget him. He is tough and makes us work for what we do. I don’t always like the work, but I love my coach and I believe in him. He is a leader to me. I will be a leader too. Mitchell Petzelt, 12 years old, 7-15-14
