What is Nagar Sankirtan ? It is a staple of Krishna Consciousness, going out with Mirdanga Karatals with hopefully a large contingent of enthusiastic devotees, if not who ever is willing to go right? I have not been able to participate in a lot of nagar Sankirtan in recent times but as my schedule has started to clear it is my plan do my favorite thing ,man a book table, but my post is about what Harinam Sankirtan is , how did it begin, stock answer with Lord Chaitanya but there is more much more. Golokera prema Dana Harinam Sankirtan , the name descended from goloka vrindavan what is the meaning here? that prem filled name that issued from the lotus mouth of Sri Krishna calling to Sri Radha and That name coming from Sri Radhaji especially when she was feeling deep moods of separation from her prana natha Madhava that name descended . Sri Radha had a dream in which she saw a exquisitely beautiful form, a golden hued Brahmin who was uttering the name of Radha and then uttering the name of Krishna and weeping walking as though in a divine trance his voice choked as he continually repeated those divine names. Amazingly when he uttered the name Radha it sounded like the voice of Krishna and when he repeated the name Krishna it sounded like Radhas own voice. This svapna vilas dream pastime of Radhikas was her vision of the divine form of Gauranga ( Radha and Krishna in one form) rādhā kṛṣṇa-praṇaya-vikṛtir hlādinī śaktir asmād ekātmānāv api bhuvi purā deha-bhedaṁ gatau tau caitanyākhyaṁ prakaṭam adhunā tad-dvayaṁ caikyam āptaṁ rādhā-bhāva-dyuti-suvalitaṁ naumi kṛṣṇa-svarūpam The loving affairs of Śrī Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa are transcendental manifestations of the Lords internal pleasure-giving potency. Although Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa are one in Their identity, They separated Themselves eternally. Now these two transcendental identities have again united, in the form of Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya. I bow down to Him, who has manifested Himself with the sentiment and complexion of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī although He is Kṛṣṇa Himself. Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu bought this Hari Nama from goloka with all of the prema in the hearts of Radha and Krishna, Now he also found a suitable place to express such a rare gift this prema Nama, the only suitable place is the heart of the pure devotees and in the pancha tattva Srivas represents the pure devotee indeed in the Chaitanya Charita of Sri Murari Gupta it is written Sri Bhakti rasa hrdaya tvam / atha Srivas ucyate because pure bhakti rasa resides in your heart you are called Srivas (Sri=Beauty of prema seva Vas= Reside) so the Srivas Agan did not mean only a part of Srivass house but Srivass heart this is where Sankirtan of Mahaprabhu began in earnest. But how did it go out because in the house/courtyard of Srivas only qualified devotees were allowed, you could not get in by wealth, austerity, family kinship, social prestige, but only by being one of The Lords own , but an amazing thing happen in that prema Kirtan the love reached such a high level it over flowed the hearts and therefore the walls and door of Srivas Angan, The Lord and his devotees were no longer in charge now Prema took over and as it burst through the doors of Srivas Angan it became Nagar Sankirtan , when devotees go out to chant with this meditation it evokes the kripa of Mahaprabhu and his devotees, please bless us that this mood and appreciation of Gaura Kirtan will come in our hearts. Param Vijayaye Sankirtanam (This Kirtan in the Srivas Angan is the incarnation in this world of Sri Krishnas maha rasa lila, mridanga and karatals are the incarnation of Krishnas Flute) this is why only the qualified were allowed entrance at Srivas Angan.
