What is Oracle RAC (Real Application Clustering)? Generally when you create a Oracle database you will have an instance (Memory (sga) + Background processes) which stands as an interface between the user and the Database. What happens if the instance crashes (planned or unplanned) all the users connected to that database will be lost. To take care of this scenario clients implement Oracle RAC. This also helps in "Load Balancing" and "Failover". Oracle uses their propreity cluster software called "Grid" to take care of clustering from 11g, in earlier versions we use "clusterware".
