What is Relay For Life? Relay For Life is an inspirational, non-competitive, 12-hour overnight fundraising event that brings the community together to celebrate life and fight cancer. Relay has a festival-like atmosphere that family, friends and co-workers of all ages can enjoy. Teams of 8-10 people fundraise individually and as a team to help the Canadian Cancer Society save lives and support those who are facing cancer. At Relay, teams gather with cancer survivors at their local track or sports field and take turns walking laps all night. Teams stay overnight in their decorated tents, united to enjoy music, food, activities and entertainment and to celebrate life! Why is Relay overnight? The Relay For Life is about a community coming together to fight cancer. The opening ceremony begins with a victory lap celebrating survivorship. After the sun sets on the horizon an emotional candle lighting (luminary) ceremony is held remembering loved ones lost to cancer and honouring those that are battling the disease. Throughout the night participants can attend the Fight Back Zone, which educates people about the effects of cancer and Canadian Cancer Society prevention/support programs. Relay For Life symbolizes and honours a cancer patient’s journey. For the thousands of Canadians fighting cancer right now, their journey is long and hard. From the shock of initial diagnosis, through days of treatment and the long nights that follow for them, cancer never sleeps, so neither do we. At Kincardine Relay For Life, each step we take is our way of showing them that they are not alone. If we can inspire as many people as possible to participate in this great cause, the number can continue to multiply in regards to research funds and cancer prevention/support programs.
