What is Sin?-Pastor Raul Ries And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, Ephesians 2:1 Paul knew, before we could understand our position in Jesus Christ, we had to understand our position in the world. We were dead in sins and transgressing against God. Many times, people confuse the word hamartia, sin, and the word paraptÅma, which is “a transgression,” but there is a clear difference between the words trespasses and sins. In the Greek, hamartia, or sin, means “to miss the mark.” We see the meaning in the old English tale about the archers. They would take a bow and arrow, and try to shoot the arrow through a hoop. When someone missed the hoop, they would say, “You missed the mark.” Every one of us has sinned and missed the mark. No one is perfect, and we will not be perfect until we are in glory, with Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. The word trespass, in the Greek is paraptÅma and it means, “a willful, deliberate act of disobedience against God.” It is not a sin of ignorance. You knew you were sinning, and you rebelled against God. You know what is right and what is wrong. If you are a child of God the Holy Spirit sets the alarm off and gives you the option to be obedient to the Word of God or sin against God. Paul declared us dead in our trespasses and sins, before we came to Jesus Christ. That is our past, when we walked according to the ways of the world. Today, as followers of Christ, walk in the light of Christ.
