What is Thrombosis? Thrombosis is the formation of a bloodclot within a blood vessel causing apartial or total obstruction; it preventsblood from flowing normally throughthe circulatory system. An abnormallyincreased tendency toward bloodclotting (caused by genetic,environmental, or unknown factors),endothelial cell injury of the vessel wall(exacerbated by infection or trauma),and static blood flow contribute to theformation of blood clots. Partial or complete detachment of thethrombus from the blood vessel wallallows the clot to embolize to vitalorgans such as the brain, heart, lungs,or leg arteries.
