What is a herniated disc? As a spinal disc degenerates and breaks - TopicsExpress

What is a herniated disc? As a spinal disc degenerates and breaks down, the inner core can leak out through the outer portion of the disc, leading to a condition known as disc herniation or a bulging disc. The weak spot in the outer core of the intervertebral disc is directly under the spinal nerve root, so a herniation puts direct pressure on the nerve. Lumbar disc herniations occur in the lower back and can cause pain to radiate into the buttock and down the leg. Cervical disc herniations occur in the neck and can affect the back of the skull, the neck, shoulder, arm, and hand. Thoracic disc herniations, while less common, can cause pain in the upper part of the back.
