What is an AOC/AOP? This article also appears in the subgroup Discovering French Wines on LinkedIn, if you are a producer or broker please come join us and talk about your wines. If you are a wine consumer and want to learn more about French wines, French wine regions, and French producers also feel free to come join this subgroup (it is a subgroup to The Wineries of the World group). If you are a French food and wine expert please also come join us to help explain the best food and wine pairings. If you are a wine drinker and want to learn enough to enjoy French wine then you should learn about was an AOC and now is supposed to be called a AOP. I have attached a link that explains the changes but without understanding what a AOC was in the first place understanding the shift is not meaningful. American wineries can use a demarcation known as AVA to differentiate what area their wine comes from...there are a few rules concerning a wine using the AVA name on the bottle but compared to every AOP these rules are trivial compared to the regulations that French producers must abide by to qualify for this certification and to be able to use it on their labels. Every French producer that qualifies has the AOC/AOP certification on a label on the bottle denoting this...not many American wineries have any mention of their AVA or that they abide by the local regulations. Often, to know and understand a wine requires and understanding of the AOC/AOP name but also of the local geography...for only then can you be sure of what grapes were used to make that blend of wine! internationalwineguild/aoc--aop
