What is happening at Geraci Spine and Sports Medicine in the field of Regenerative Medicine? Dr. Geraci has trained with a physician specialist in Los Angeles who has been using both Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Stem Cells on professional athletes including the Dodgers, LA Lakers and the Anaheim Angels. Dr. Geraci uses one the most advanced centrifuge systems available that can not only concentrate the platelets to the ideal concentration for healing but can also exclude the harmful neutrophils of the white blood cells yet keep the healing properties of the other white blood cells. Currently Dr. Geraci is involved, as the principle investigator, in an Internal Review Board (IRB) approved Stem Cell and PRP Study for shoulder, hip and knee osteoarthritis. He is also involved in another IRB approved Stem Cell and PRP Study on their use in lumbar discs with The Buffalo Research Group. Our group is using a cavitation system, developed in Australia, for concentrating stem cells from adipose (fat) tissue. The Australian researcher has brought this equipment to Buffalo as well as protocols used on approximately 1,600 patients, where they have shown growth of cartilage in joints with osteoarthritis, for us to use with our patients The Buffalo Research Group completed their first stem cell/PRP joint injections in 2 patients with knee osteoarthritis on December 2, 2014. Several other patients with hip and knee osteoarthritis as well as our first lumbar disc injections are planned for January, 2015. Our group has researchers in PRP and stem cells, from the University at Buffalo, involved in the study to ensure the most beneficial concentrations of PRP and Stem Cells for our patients. We anticipate participants, not only from Buffalo and WNY to be involved but also from Toronto and Southern Ontario. Even though we are in our infancy, as a medical profession, in the use of Stem Cells and PRP, more and more research is being presented at scientific meetings. The largest of these scientific meetings was held in Las Vegas in June of this year, by The Orthobiologic Institute (TOBI). They held their 5th annual meeting with over 350 participants and presenters from Europe, Asia, the United States and Canada. Dr. Geraci was the only physician from the Buffalo area in attendance at this very important meeting where the most current researchers from around the world presented their studies. Dr. Geraci also is the co-chair of the North American Spine Society’s (NASS) mid-year meeting where he will moderate and present a session on the use of Stem Cells and PRP in the lumbar discs. This is the largest spine society world-wide and this will be the first time a NASS meeting will have an entire session dedicated on this subject. Check back on Thursday for more FAQ about PRP and Stem Cells. For more information on our study on the use of PRP and Stem Cells go to The Buffalo Research Group website: thebuffaoresearchgroup.
