What is in a name? I recently read where the most popular names given new babies last year were Noah(for boys), and Sophie(for girls). Historically, especially in Bible times, names had much more significance. They usually told you something about the character of the person; something about how they were born, or conceived; something prophetic about their lives. This morning, we are going to take a look at the name of Jesus. So many songs of praise and worship are about the name of Jesus! Yet we have in many ways taken His name for granted. We have trivialized His name by using it in vain, or perhaps even manipulated it for our advantage. Many times we have made promises to The Lord and others in His name that we have broken. And so much of the time, we ignore this powerful tool, failing to call upon His name to fight temptation, to defeat the Enemy, to claim and proclaim His power and might and love for us. We sing Jesus, name above ALL names, but do we REALLY mean it? This morning as we examine Gods word in Acts 4: 5-14, let us ask ourselves, What names do I put before the name of Jesus? Where does His name fall in my list of priorities; what choices and decisions do I make that do not honor the name of Jesus, that do not honor my commitment to Him in service and in love?
