What is metabolic flexibility? Essentially it is how well your body shifts between burning various substrates, i.e. carbs, fat or protein (this is what we DO NOT WANT.) Someone with poor metabolic flexibility will burn a disproportionate amount of calories from an unfavorable source at different work Zones. For instance - poor metabolic flexibility would cause someone to burn a great percentage of calories from carbs while at rest, as opposed to burning a large amount from fat (which is what we want.) Like wise - that same person would burn calories from fat during their work out when we might want them to burn more carbs. Why more carbs? Because carbs are like nitrous in a car. It improves horse power and thus performance. Being metabolic flexible allows you to reach the body you want in a shorter period of time.
