What is poverty? Can it be measured by income - or the lack of it - or is it a state of mind? I am becoming aware that there might be a self-inflicted element to some peoples poverty. Some people think luxury is the opposite of poverty. It is not. It is the opposite of vulgarity. Some people think that the worst kind of poverty is when you dont know where your next meal is coming from, destitute, down trodden, obscure, plain and little. But they think wrong! I think the worst kind of poverty is soulless and heartless. Do you know who is the woman in the middle of the picture? ...No, she is not the president of the market women association, she is not a minister of some sort, she is not a state governor or member of house of senate... she is the President of a Country called Malawi! She doesnt subscribe to flamboyant she is not in denial, she has nothing else to prove aside her dedication to serving her people-Note *SERVING HER PEOPLE* when she saw in the countrys budget that money was provisioned for the purchase of a Presidential jet, she crossed it out, stressing- that the country had more pressing issues than a presidential jet. She opted to fly domestic flights instead. What!? She is not even the Aviation minister, so do not think shes opting to fly their domestic flights with everybody else in other to assure the public of the safety of their countrys airways. She did not buy a flying armoured bullet proof car to protect herself because she is already aware that is hardly the most effective form of security. It is share waste, because at some point in life you will still have a need to come out of your hiding and face the world...She also knows that There is no Them. There are only facets of Us !!.. An bullet proof armoured flying vehicle is only a means of safety whilst youre sitting in it, once you step out of it to attend social, public, private or official functions...you are as vulnerable as the next person in terms of safety and security...So how does one justify the need for spending so much money on the most brief and ineffective form of safety and security?? The test of a transformation progress is not whether you add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether you provide enough for those who have too little. Now you see why I think poverty of the mind is the worst kind of poverty? It is a good thing to know what it is to be poor. The real opposition is that between the ego-bound man, whose existence is structured by the principle of having, and the free man, who has overcome his egocentricity.
