What is racism? Webster says this: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. I think it can be more subtle than that meaning to group or categorize a people based on race alone. Many times in my life I have been accused of being white washed as I do not exhibit the traits commonly associated with being black. As a person of mixed race I never really felt comfortable with identifying as just black since I am not just black. It took me until I was in my 40s to adopt the phrase; Woman of Color, to describe my ethnicity. However my description or understanding of myself did not in any way make me impervious to the racism that continues to plague black people in America. I think most people associate racism with oppressive racism like someone being denied a job based solely on the color of their skin. However thats not the kind that infuriates me, in fact I would rather someone deny me a place where I am unwanted so I can find a better place. Passive racism is the brand where we separate people based on race with phrases like those people. when Hitler was rounding up the first Jews and boarding them on the trains to go to the camps the passive racist were the ones saying well Im sure theres a good reason or its their problem or we probably dont have all the facts.... See without those passive racist there can be no Hitlers. Earlier I responded to a comment on someone Elses page in reference to a statement made about the looting in Ferguson. the post was about an article featuring a black woman who is a business owner in the area. The comment that bothered me was something to the effect of they are hurting their own people. why is it a racist statement? What is the connection between the folks doing the looting and the person featured as a business owner other than the color of their skin? How are the folks robbing her or rioting her people? I relate to Mike Brown, not because we are both black, (as I already said I am not just black), but because we are both Americans and as such are both to be protected under the law. We have the inalienable right to life. That right supersedes an officers right to bear arms with an unarmed person. I would expect with every instance of a police officer using deadly force against an unarmed person there be a full investigation and charges to be levied. No I can not wrap my head around deadly force on a person who was detained for jaywalking. I know I can not convince a person who sees equality or justice where there is none nor do I care to. I wish though there was some way to know what they are up front so I have the option to simply not interact with them. I never thought I would see the day where I would bear witness to 2 lynchings in modern times and I know there are so many more. why do I think its racially motivated? Because I have never in my life heard of a black police officer shooting an unarmed white person without consequence. I support everyones right to feel and think as they wish - I actually dont want to debate them I just want to not know them on a social level. :)
