What is really sad is how the American people have been kept in the dark as to what the ACA really is. The whole purpose and driving force behind the ACA was to improve care and lower costs. The majority of the law deals with Medicare. The medical costs in this country are costing our government (and our taxes) about 18% of GDP, the highest in the world. The ACA is a start at addressing this. This law strengthened Medicare and added 10 years to its fiscal life. The savings were put right back into free preventive care. Hospitals with excessive readmission rates (meaning they didnt do the job right the first time) are now being fined. They are also fined for high infection rates. They are being financially rewarded for their quality of care, for using electronic health records and escript. Grants are being used to expand teaching hospitals, to help rural health clinics, to increase residency slots at these hospitals, and to help fund med school for those entering primary care. Funds are being used to fund medical care delivery systems, slowly doing away with the old fee for service plans. And private health care plans are doing the the same thing. American Indian health care improvements - in fact, they are getting a fabulous deal - free health insurance with no deductible, no copays, no out of pocket costs. This law is reducing the deficit by $210billion dollars. All of us who have had insurance have been paying about $1200 a year in higher premiums to help cover the costs for treating the uninsured. Our taxes have been paying for billions of dollars in unreimbursed hospital care for this with no insurance. Repealing the ACA would eliminate all of these provisions in the law and bankrupt the nation. Yes, I would prefer single payer and some day we will get there. In the meantime, take the time to educate yourself as to what this law really is. Read the bill. I did.
