What is required here is that the Met and policing in general are more transparent about their processes. Vetting is not only about having a conviction, its about peoples associations. There are more than enough talented Black, Minority Ethnic people out there who have degrees and could quite easily become police officers however when you dont have a conviction and you are still being turned down without being told why that is where the mistrust is. The statistics show that if you are BME then you are 4.5 times more likely to fail vetting. The question here is why? And that is what needs to be challenged. But yet again rather than address what is wrong with the process theyd rather take the easy way out by challenging the integrity of BME people. Just like the statistics for stop and search that up until very recently cited that you were 6 times more likely to be stopped, the way in which the power is used has now been overhauled to reflect a more intelligence led outcome. If the Met wants to increase its diversity within the rank and file then it needs to have a more effective community engagement strategy that looks to restore trust and confidence amongst black, minority ethnic people by being more open and transparent about their processes that are having a disproportionate outcome on minority communities. The BME communities of London are not looking for preferential treatment, we are looking for processes that are just and fair to all.
