What is science-based #horse training? And why does the term science freak so many people out? Question One: Science-based horse training is teaching new behaviors or modifying existing ones using the laws and principles of learning and behavior. How horses learn is a well-studied science, not much different than other well-studied sciences - like chemistry, biology, physiology etc - that help us explain how the horse functions. These laws and principles explain how horses learn, and allow us to predictably change behavior. Question Two: Short answer? I dont know. Long answer:I think there may be a misconception that involving science in horse training means that it becomes cold, and clinical, and that those applying it deny the horse has thoughts, feelings or emotions. I can personally attest that since learning the science behind how horses learn, Ive actually found myself becoming more compassionate towards horses, and more concerned about the ethics of how I train. I also no longer lose my temper when training, nor do I take things personally if they arent going the way I want - because even if I need to puzzle things through to come to a resolution, I have a road map to help guide me through any confusion. Anger and frustration are often born from lack of knowledge, and educating myself on this science has been a huge game changer for me as a trainer. Whether the word science freaks you out or not, check out this great series: The Birth of Animal Behavior and Training as a Science, from Dr Sophia Yin, There is nothing to fear here. :)
