Hot Water Extraction (sometimes known as ‘Spray Extraction’ or ‘Steam Cleaning’) The basic principle of this system is that a pre-treatment is applied to the carpet, agitated by the use of either a power-head on the machine, a rotary machine as a separate operation or by the use of a hand pile brush. A rinsing solution is then sprayed onto the carpet fibres through a spray jet or a series of spray jets. The solution is then recovered by a vacuum immediately behind the spray jets into a waste recovery tank. These types of machines come in a variety of different packages, some with single vacuum motors others with two. There is one where two additional vacuums can be linked in to provide even more water lift. Pumps which transfer the rinse agent to the carpet fibres can also vary from a standard 50psi to a variable pump which can be adjusted to suit the job in hand. It is essential that the operator identifies the correct balance for the particular item being cleaned. Great care must be taken not to overwet, drying time can vary and may be between 12 and 24 hours. This time factor may be reduced significantly by improving the conditions that will allow the moisture to get away more quickly. This may mean introducing air movers or turbodryers.
