What is the Sanctuary at Stake in Text I Corinthians 3:17: Our Body, The Holy Spirit or Something Else? "If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy: for the temple of God, that ye are, is holy" (1 Cor 3:17) In 1 Corinthians 6:19, it says that our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit: "Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit." I Corinthians 6:19 Ratify it .. also in verse 16: "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you." I Corinthians 6:16 But if our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit dwells in us, how to understand the text of 1 Corinthians 3:17? Both will be destroyed? One or the other? Each individual believer, has the Holy Spirit: "If any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His" Romans 8:9 However, the church as a community, in the collective sense, is also the temple, the indwelling Holy Spirit (2 Cor 6:16). It is exactly this second aspect that Paul is referring. Neither member of the church, in an individual sense, nor the Holy Spirit would be destroyed, but those who were instigating jealousy, quarrels and dissensions in the Corinthian church, which in the present text, is seen as the "temple of God. " The Bible Study Almeida, commenting on the text in the study, says the following: "Analysis of 1 Corinthians chapter 3, we see that boasting some philosophical clue was childishness spiritual producing factions and tendencies to destroy the church of Corinth. Since the community of believers is the temple of God (v.16), the cause of their division (v. 3.4) to desecrate and destroy, so it will be destroyed as punishment for his acts of sacrilege. " The verb destroy the Greek text used in the analysis is phtheirei, which can mean "destroy", "ruin", "corrupt", "ruin". That is, those who were "desecrating" the temple of God - the church at Corinth - will not be spared sentencing occasion of divine judgment.
