What is the most essential question that the human can put to - TopicsExpress

What is the most essential question that the human can put to life? I suppose it much depends on the philosophical horizon within which the question is asked. An ontological horizon will serve up its own essential question, as will an epistemological horizon, a metaphysical horizon or an existentialist horizon. I will posit the question from within the latter horizon or framework and venture to say that the fundamental existential question one must put to oneself is: "What am I? And most specifically, what is the "I" to which I am variously identified with and related to? Another approach would be to ask what is the "self?" This is no easy question that can be answered simply. There must be some connection between this present self and its past and its future? Yet, there seems some discontinuity as well. These are the things that occupy my waking hours.
