Sitting in my kitchen today, pondering the holidays and wondering how I can contribute more…. September, Washington DC: I stopped at a Starbucks to use the restroom. Decided to purchase 4 cute mugs. I was in a hurry. The guy in front of me was not. He wanted to purchase a latte, but did not have any money. I noticed he was wearing old tattered clothes and shoes. He had a Starbucks card with only $1--something on it. He hemmed and hawed and settled for a regular coffee. I purchased my mugs and a $25 gift card. He was adding milk (or something) to his coffee. I set the card next to him, said here you go (with a smile), and walked out the door. As I was leaving the parking lot, he had come out to say thank you. He had sort of a stunned look in his eyes. I was already in my car, leaving, so we just exchanged a little wave. Simple act of kindness? Yes, but Id like to believe it changed his life in some small way, knowing someone cared. I know it changed mine. That little $25 gift card filled me up. It made my day, my week my year. Year? Yes, because I am now pondering how I can do more.
