What is the significance of 15th August when India became a free country in 1947? The actual date of freedom for both India and Pakistan announced by Lord Mountbaton was 14th August. It was changed to 15th August in the case of India on the advice of the Hindu astrologers. 14th August was the date when Britain scored victory in World war II in 1945 following bombing of Hiroshima and surrender by Japanese forces to the British forces whose Asian commander in chief was Lord Mountbaton. August 14 was a significant historical day of great joy in the personal life of Lord Mountbaton.
