What is the significance of Guru Purnima in India? Guru Purnima is also known as Vyasa Purnima and it takes place on the full moon day during the month of Ashadha. In olden days this day was celebrated and was especially reserved for Guru’s Puja and their worship. Their students would offer Puja and pay due respect to their Gurus or guide who were their spiritual mentors. This day is celebrated as birth anniversary of Veda Vyasa. The day we celebrate Guru Purnima was the day when Krishna-Dwaipayana Vyasa the author of Mahabharata was born to sage Parashara and fishermen’s daughter Satyavati. Veda Vyasa was known mostly for doing social service by gathering all vedic and divided them into several categories based on their use in rituals. Like Paila, Vaisampayana, Jaimini and Sumantu. Due to his hard earned respect he was named as Vyasa. Futher he even divided the Vedas namely Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva. And this is why hes regarded as the great sage and the original guru.
