What is the value of a smile? What is the value of looking someone right in the eyes and smiling? Thirty percent of every school are left out. Eighteen percent are singled out. Smiles do not cost very much. Being mean is rampant. So is hostility towards those who are different. Our politicians have taken the lead on this negative discourse and it is disgusting. Insults fly and phony apologies follow. Hypocrisy abounds. What is the value of a smile? This morning I had a chat with a little boy who was crying at the bus stop. He has an accent and two of the other boys were picking on him because of it. When I asked them why, they said he was different, so it was okay to pick on him. Are these the lessons we want to teach? My parents had serious brogues and it limited their possibilities. Differences abound. Differences make us strong. Smiles are priceless, and they dont have an accent.
