What is the value of your Work? She came to me looking for a Job. - TopicsExpress

What is the value of your Work? She came to me looking for a Job. “What kind of Job do you want?” I asked her and she said, “A receptionist or a sales job”. What else do you want to do? I replied. “I can do any job”. She answered. “Can you really do ANY job? Maybe you CAN DO any job but then SHOULD you?” I asked. This is one question we need to ask ourselves, is your life’s work all about ability or is there some value to what you do when you work? Everyone has a unique Shape and you are designed not just for the work you can do but for something more valuable. When you understand that thing that is beyond your work, you discover the value of work and give your work meaning. In his book E-Myth revisited, Mike Gerber talks of the difference between the commodity you sell in your business and the actual product you are in business to sell. He says that the commodity is the thing that the customer walks out with in his hand while the product is what your customer feels as he walks out of that business. Many focus on the commodity and ignore the product not knowing that the thing that actually keeps you in business is the product not the commodity. The commodity can be exhausted but the experience a person gets from buying the commodity is something that cannot be exhausted. As long as you keep your focus on giving the customer some great experience or another, you can use other commodities to produce the same effect. The same goes for work. Many focus on the work that gives them pleasure and ignore the value the work is supposed to be adding to people’s lives. If I focus on adding value to the lives of humanity through my work, I begin to see my work as mere routine and my work becomes about others and not about me. That is when work truly has value. That is when work can also deliver value to you.
