What is there about an Oak? Were here in Dallas and surrounded by 50 plus year old oaks. We are in the midst of cold cold air moving down from the Artic Circle and have actually had the pipes freeze up on us...ergo some lines sans water. Be that as it may, early this am I smelled my youth in Atascadero wafting unseen upon the breeze and stimulating my olfactory senses. OAK SMOKE! Somewhere nearby, someone is burning oak wood in their fireplace. Night before last, I tried to cook some Tri-Tip over a gas B-B-que, to which I tried to add some old oak branches that I had soaked in water to make them a little more smoky. It just didnt work out too well. There is nothing, but nothing, that can ever take the place of an oak-wood fired BBQue in the Santa Maria Elks style. BUT, and this is a great big But, (no pun intended) oak smoke rattles my nostalgia button like nothing else. Ls back in the hospital finishing up his chemo and we hope, oh do we hope, that this will finish his treatment and that all things will be ok...miss you all...howie
