What is this on the surface of Mars? A Martian Analemma, a curve tracing the Suns motion over a one year period. The rover Opportunity using its fish-eye camera took an image every three days for one Martian year. The end result is that the Analemma is pear-shaped, the reason, similar in tilt to Earth but Mars has a more elliptical orbit than Earth. For comparison here is our planets Analemma, figure-8 in shape instead of pear-shaped.
