What is visual peacemaking? Ill share a few thoughts here to help put more flesh and bone on this idea, an increasingly important aspect to my work. Thought #1: In the work of peace making, one of the first steps is beginning to see other people as God sees them, or to see them with eyes of compassion in their own context. Too often we are guilty of “othering”, increasing distance from people of another group merely by our bias, suspicion, or prejudice. In contrast, the work of “visual peacemaking” is the work of depicting our common humanity that can challenge our negative stereotypes and build bridges of understanding. We need to see the other as part of God’s larger humanity. The apostle Paul showed us this attitude in his prayer for the all of humanity in an important prayer in Ephesians: “For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name.” (Eph. 2:14).
