What is your definition of a HOMESTEAD ...My little place, located in Maud, Texas, is 1 acre, which to me is a homestead. I have planted fruit trees around the perimeter, it has a good well, 4 pecan trees that generate about 2 thousand dollars a year in pecans, and free pecans for all my family, a pear tree that produces a thousand pounds of pears a year, and makes amazing pear preserves, two small gardens that produce more than I can eat, and I am working on two green houses as well. The hardest part for me is the garden. I plant it, but working it and keeping it watered is not my strong suit. I am a vegetarian, so the eggs go to family, and when I fish or hunt, it goes in the freezer for family and kids. In the summer time I use 4 heavy duty water hoses stretched across the yard, to make a hot outdoor shower. I also hang my clothes on the fence to dry which saves about twenty dollars a month. And in the winter I use the fireplace to heat the house. I would like to know more about what each of you do as Homesteaders, or what you plan on doing. I used to read mother earth news magazine, but I realized there is more on the web for people like us than anyone could ever read. PS.. I had 10 acres, and it was way more than enough for me, but in Texas you really need 10 acres or more to get certain exemptions by law. Being a single parent, my electric bill runs about $60 in the spring and fall and about $120 mid summer and mid winter. My 7 year old son spends most of his time outside playing on a dirt mound, or just finding things to do.
