What its like to be a historian in public, compared to other Academic careers: Chemist: The bonds reveal that a specific reaction is necessary to create a working system that is both sustainable and cost-effective. Response by people: Sounds good, lets invest in that reaction. Physicist: The orbits of the planets in this part of the galaxy differs vastly from that of our part. Response by people: Fascinating. What does that tell us about our own part of the galaxy? Archaeologist: The tombs reveal that the gravesite was robbed likely by the Romans in the 4th century. Response by people: Wow! A 1500 year mystery solved! Engineer: The structural integrity of this beam is disproportionate to the structure as a whole and should be replaced. Response by people: Sound advice, we will get right on it. Sociologist: The pooling data shows that on average women sleep longer than men. Response by people: Wow thats fascinating! Now we know more about subtle differences between genders. Political Scientist: This policy led to the great recession of 1865 in France. Response by people: Wow that policy sucked, why would anyone do that? Historian: The action of this state in creating a division among people following a major world-wide conflict resulted in a fragmented nation and a loss of human rights. Response by people: YOURE BIAS. YOURE JUST PUSHING AN AGENDA. YOURE IGNORANT OF HISTORY. YOU NEED TO READ A BOOK.
