What kind of day has it been? A simple phrase with a simple meaning: What can be said about events up until now? Last night, we were given the series finale of HBOs The Newsroom. This episode was powerful in so many ways; its greatest strength being the truth of the human condition. I cant say much on it, for its clarity is granted best when paired with the whole series. One could watch the first and final episode and understand it, but Im not sure you could feel it. A few worthy quotes that sum up the experience. You dont need a suit of armor; you can be a knight even if you dont have a horse. Theres a hole in the side of the boat. That hole is never going to be fixed and it is never going away and you cant get a new boat, this is your boat. What you have to do is bail water out faster that its coming in. We live in a time where were mean to each other. Snark is a kind of currency. It is the idiots version of wit. I want to see a renaissance of decency. Memphis is a stand in for where you are now, that it really means thats how I got here. See, The Newsroom was about a lot of things, but above all else, it was about truth. And more so than the lies we hear, it confronts the truths in life we fail to see. About ourselves. The countless references to Don Quixote within the series are quite fitting. Charlie is a personification of the man. And, honestly, the show has shown me that Don Quixote is a fine inspiration. A man, finctional he may be, worthy of being a role model. I wish everyone would give their time to the show, and look for the things I see in it, as I feel Ive learned and grown for it.
